Claiming compensation after an assault
By Steven Astley, Injury Partner at GLP Solicitors
Experiencing an assault can have long-lasting physical, emotional and financial consequences. While many victims focus on recovery, fewer realise they may also be entitled to claim compensation, even if the offender was never charged or convicted.
In the UK alone, police record over 1.4 million violent offences each year, yet studies suggest less than 3% of victims apply for criminal injury compensation. This means thousands of people miss out on financial support that could help them rebuild their lives.
Can you claim compensation after an assault?
If you were injured due to a violent crime, you may be able to make a claim through the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA) or, in some cases, a civil claim against a responsible party.
Compensation may cover:
- Physical injuries and long-term damage
- Psychological trauma such as PTSD
- Loss of earnings if you’re unable to work
- Essential expenses linked to your recovery
Awards vary depending on severity, but CICA compensation can range from around £1,000 to cover £500,00 in the most serious cases.
Time limits matter
In most cases, assault compensation claims must be started within two years of the incident. Exceptions may apply, particularly for historic abuse or where psychological injuries only became apparent later. Reporting the assault to the police is usually essential.
“Many victims don’t realise that compensation can reflect not only physical injuries, but the emotional and financial impact of an assault. With the right advice, the process can feel far more manageable,” says Steven Astley, Injury Partner at GLP Solicitors.
